Why we need Womxn Illuminated
College is harder for womxn of color
Romero, E. (2018, December). Retrieved February 2, 2020.
The world of higher education was historically created for white wealthy males, thus making it difficult for students of color, especially for women of color to be successful.
Because college was not created for people of color, students of color need to see themselves reflected in the institution in order to realize that they can be successful.
And colleges are acknowledging the lack of diversity on college campuses and instead of noting it as a problem, they are simply normalizing it, which is part of the problem.
We Are Not Tokens
Taylor, Morgan. (2017, April 20). Racial Diversity Is More Than Just Demographic Representation. Retrieved October 2, 2019.
Racial and ethnic diversity needs to include more than just the demographic makeup of the student body. It includes diversifying the greater campus as a whole, so that students can see themselves in what they are learning, in how they are learning, and in those teaching them.
Demographic diversity alone without inclusion misses the opportunity for the presence of a more diverse student body. Students need to feel welcome and included.
